Founded in 1982, the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute is dedicated to the advancement and communication of basic mathematical knowledge, the development of human capital for the growth and use of such knowledge, and the cultivation in society at large of appreciation for the beauty, power and importance of mathematical ideas. Based in Berkeley, California, it is one of the world’s leading centers for collaborative research, hosting some 2,000 researchers every year. The Mercer Family Foundation has provided $400,000 in grants to the Institute since 2016.
